Total Supply

PreviousCirculating SupplyNextToken Minting

Last updated 8 days ago

The total supply of ICNT tokens is capped at 1 billion ICNT, creating a finite resource that contributes to the long-term value and scarcity of the token. At network launch, the initial supply is 700 million ICNT, with up to 300 million ICNT being minted over the first five years to support growth and incentives.

⚠️ Note: The additional 300 million tokens are not guaranteed to be minted. They represent the upper bound of the protocol’s total supply and are subject to governance decisions. If no additional minting occurs, the total supply remains fixed at 700 million ICNT.

This chart shows the linear increase in the total supply of ICNT tokens, starting at 700 million and potentially reaching up to 1 billion ICNT over the first 5 years. This projection illustrates the minting of up to 300 million additional ICNT tokens to support network growth and incentives.

Components of Total Supply

The ICNT total supply includes several key elements:

  • Initial Allocation: Tokens initially allocated to the founding team, investors, and early partners, subject to controlled unlock schedules. For details, visit the Initial Allocation page.

  • Reward Reserve: A designated reserve of ICNT used primarily to incentivise Hardware Providers (HPs), HyperNodes, and other network participants.

  • Minting: Additional tokens minted over the first five years to meet the network's operational and incentive requirements. See Token Minting for details.

  • Unlock Schedule: Tokens are gradually released from vesting schedules into circulation. More details can be found on the Unlock Schedule page.

Total Unlocked Supply (TUS)

Total Unlocked Supply (TUS) represents all ICNT tokens minted but no longer under vesting or reserved for undistributed rewards. It is calculated as follows:

TUS(t)=[Minted Tokens(t)]−[Reward Reserve(t)]−[Unvested Tokens(t)]

Where:

  • Minted Tokens: Total ICNT minted on-chain (initial supply plus governance-approved minting).

  • Reward Reserve: Balance reserved for undistributed rewards.

  • Unvested Tokens: Tokens still locked in vesting contracts.

Practical Implementation

  • Smart Contract Queries: Real-time calculation using mint events, reward reserve balances, and vesting contract balances.

  • Real-Time Updates: TUS is recalculated regularly, enabling transparency via dashboards.

Benefits

  • Transparency: Easily verifiable with standard on-chain queries.

  • Clarity: Clearly distinguishes between unlocked and vested or reserved tokens.

  • No Circular References: Defined independently from circulating supply.

Circulating vs. Total Supply

While Total Supply reflects the maximum ICNT that can exist, Circulating Supply represents actively tradable tokens, typically lower during initial network phases due to vesting and undistributed rewards.

For detailed information, refer to the Circulating Supply page.

Importance of Total Supply

Capping the total supply at 1 billion ICNT is crucial for:

  • Maintaining Token Value: Finite supply supports long-term value growth.

  • Long-Term Incentives: Controlled releases through vesting and minting sustain long-term network engagement.

Network Stability: Structured token releases mitigate sudden inflationary pressure, contributing to overall economic stability.
